Theatermaker and author, city councilor, and cultural commissioner – the native of Kufstein, Klaus Reitberger, wears many hats in his hometown. When the physicist and philosopher was asked to create a narrative for the Light Festival at Kufstein Fortress, he knew immediately that he didn't want to impose an artificial story on the castle; reality, he believed, was fascinating enough.

From his progressive spirit emerges the castle as a timeless observer, a compassionate witness to the centuries. It tells of the changes that have unfolded in the city and the surrounding countryside; of war and peace, sickness and healing, ignorance and education, culture and nature. The Hero Organ resonates every day at 12:00 noon across Kufstein and, under suitable weather conditions, its sound can be heard all the way to neighboring Bavaria and up to the peaks of the Kaisergebirge. With its 4,948 pipes, it is the largest free-standing organ in Europe – to skillfully play such an extraordinary instrument, one requires an equally extraordinary musician.

Johannes Berger, the custodian of the Hero Organ Kufstein since 2009, more than meets this challenge. The organist is a laureate of national and international competitions and serves as the conductor and harpsichordist of the Baroque orchestra Concerto München. Furthermore, he possesses a unique ability to harmonize the visual tales of the castle with the highlights of musical history.
